Canon U.S.A. Intros New Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera

By

Product: CR-2 AF Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera
Top Line: Canon U.S.A., Inc. is introducing the Canon CR-2 AF Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera, a new camera that delivers high-resolution, 20.2 megapixel images—the highest resolution available in any digital retinal camera today—with extraordinary detail, contrast, color fidelity and speed. Enhanced from the previous CR-2 Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera, the new CR-2 AF features a special algorithm to correct for reduced contrast.
The CR-2 AF features low-flash intensity to minimize pupil constriction and shorten the time needed to take multiple pictures. Additionally, the CR-2 AF's light weight and compact design make it “an ideal diagnostic companion for offices where space is at a premium or where telemedicine portability is required,” Canon said. With an optical pathway entirely manufactured by Canon and virtually free of aberration, the CR-2 AF's digital filter set is able to provide precise and consistent views of the various layers of the retina.
Close Up: Enhanced from the CR-2 Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera, the new CR-2 AF is equipped with the newly added contrast enhancement feature for even greater photographic quality. The camera's new contrast enhancement feature provides increased image clarity from previous models by emphasizing the difference in “redness” and “brightness” of blood vessel structures relative to their surroundings. By expanding the range of brightness values in a fundus image the reader is able to better discriminate minute retinal details between areas initially having small differences in density.
Building upon the success of the CR-2, the CR-2 AF is equipped with features to assist the user in easily capturing high-quality images. Image Error Detection automatically confirms both correct alignment and focus while the Quick Preview mode allows users to preview their images directly on the dedicated EOS camera immediately after the image is captured.
The camera has several automatic features for ease of use, including:
  • Auto-Focus with Manual Alignment Override automatically focuses the eye by partially depressing the joystick, or easily switches to manual focus with a twist of the focus ring.
  • Auto-Exposure automatically measures the volume of infrared light at the retina and adjusts the flash intensity.
  • Auto-Capture automatically captures the image once the eye is properly focused.
  • Auto-Fundus automatically switches from the external eye to retinal observation mode when the eye is properly aligned.
Vital Stats: The CR-2 AF Digital Retinal Camera is now available directly from Canon as well as through authorized Canon U.S.A. dealers.
