FORT WORTH, Texas—Alcon informed eyecare professionals on Wednesday that it is modifying the manner in which it engages with U.S. customers and shifting to a “full-time virtual approach” for its field sales force.” The move is effective immediately, the company noted, adding that the transition to remote account management will remain in effect until further notice. In a note to ECPs, Alcon cited the ongoing coronavirus outbreak across the nation and said it will remain vigilant in monitoring this evolving novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation.

“Our actions are guided with the top priority of protecting the health and safety of Alcon associates and the customers and patients we support, while also ensuring continuity in the supply of products you rely on,” the note stated. “We continue to comply with the latest CDC guidance related to this highly dynamic public health issue.”

The company stated that, in part because of its position as a global eyecare business, it has a diverse manufacturing footprint and inventory on hand, as well “as business continuity plans to ensure our supply chain is maintained during this unprecedented time.” Alcon also said it does have contingency plans to include alternative methods of product distribution and supplier sourcing, where possible.

The note was signed by Richard E. Weisbarth, OD, FAAO, FNAP, vice president, professional affairs; and Sean Clark, vice president and general manager, U.S. Vision Care.

The note added, “We recognize that some of your offices might be operating at limited capacity or closed completely based on guidance from local governments so your dedicated representative will be in touch in the coming days to determine your practice and patient needs during this time.”

The company explained that the broader Alcon sales team and its customer service organization will remain a point of contact by telephone at 1-(800) 241-5999.

In addition, Alcon announced that all ECP training programs at the Fort Worth campus and in eyecare offices as well as dinner meetings are canceled through the second quarter. Those impacted by these cancellations have been or will be notified directly. The company said it will keep ECPs informed as plans evolve for rescheduling these events, as well as future training plans.

With respect to congresses and meetings, Alcon said it is communicating with the professional associations about these planned sessions, and will align “any Alcon activities scheduled at these events—including advisory boards—with association decisions and CDC guidance at the appropriate time.”

Finally, Alcon stated that with respect to its position regarding contact lens wear, “there is currently no evidence that contact lens wear poses a particular risk of infection with coronavirus (COVID-19). Therefore, patients should continue to follow the wear and care instructions that you recommend while using contact lenses.”

The note concluded, “Thank you for your ongoing trust in Alcon. We believe transparency and communication are essential, and we will update you as new information becomes available.”
