PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.—With nearly 60,000 eyecare providers nationwide, less than 2 percent of practicing optometrists and ophthalmologists in the U.S. identify as Black or African American. Black EyeCare Perspective is making it easier for patients to locate a Black eyecare provider in their community with their Black Eye Doctor Locator which is now available on the website. Able to be searched by location and filtered by specialty, the Black Eye Doctor Locator has over 100 Black optometrists (OD) and ophthalmologists (MD) and the database is growing daily. To be included in the Black Eye Doctor Locator information can be submitted here.

Black EyeCare Perspective, founded by optometrists Drs. Adam Ramsey and Darryl Glover, was designed, and created to cultivate and foster lifelong relationships between Black eyecare providers and the eyecare industry.  Along with Drs. Essence Johnson, chief visionary officer and Jacobi Cleaver, director of program management, Black EyeCare Perspective is redefining the color of the eyecare industry 1 percent at a time by creating a pipeline for Black students into optometry and connecting communities with Black eyecare professionals and Black eyecare businesses.

Black EyeCare Perspective’s 13% Promise initiative is a call for greater Black and African American representation in the eyecare industry to align with the U.S. census for better health outcomes.

Black EyeCare Perspective is creating awareness and changing the narrative of the role of optometry from a profession provider and patient perspective. It's facilitating courageous conversations within the eyecare community through diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. BEP also noted it is "changing the mindset of the next generation of eyecare professionals to impact the industry in ways we have yet to see."
