PORTLAND, Ore.—Services will be held here this weekend for Jonathan (Jon) Torrey, age 67, who passed away unexpectedly at home Friday, Dec. 6, 2019. Torrey was a long term optical industry executive, including his pioneering work in the computer vision arena though Prio, a company he founded and ran for many years. He also made substantial contributions to Think About Your Eyes, where he served as director of professional relations and as executive director for several years.

According to The Oregonian, Torrey grew up in the Portland area, graduating from Lake Oswego High School and the Museum Art School in Portland, now Pacific Northwest College of Art. He was a loving father, devoted husband and a unique entrepreneur. Torrey devoted the majority of his career to raising awareness for eye health. He will be remembered for his artistic background and his adventurous spirit: sailing across the Pacific Ocean, cross-country motorcycle rides and mountain climbing in the Cascades.

Torrey was born in Onowa, Ia. to Opal and Richard Torrey. He is survived by his wife, Julie; son, Samuel, his wife, Elena and grandson, Evan; sister, Barbara and her husband, Linn Whitaker; and sister, Robin West. He was preceded in death by his previous wife, Nancie; sister, Dinah Lee Torrey; brother, Bill; and his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019, at Finley Sunset Hills Mortuary, 6801 S.W. Sunset Hwy, Portland, OR 97225. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jon's memory may be made to The Melanoma Research Foundation and there is an online guest book posted here.
