ALEXANDRIA, Va.—The Vision Council is promoting the importance of UV protective eyewear in celebration of National Sunglasses Day, which falls annually on June 27. This annual celebration aims to remind consumers that wearing sunglasses is a health necessity, alongside a fashion statement. This reminder is especially important this year, says The Vision Council, because “ As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt the lives of millions, a recent Google Community Mobility Report indicates that activity in outdoor places like national parks, public beaches, dog parks, plazas and public gardens is up 52 percent.”

Every year, The Vision Council encourages the optical community to participate in National Sunglasses day by posting on social media using the official hashtags #SunglassesSelfie and #NationalSunglassesDay, and by tagging @TheVisionCouncil on Facebook and Instagram and @OpticalIndustry on Twitter. In 2019, National Sunglasses Day garnered over 1.2 billion media impressions. The Vision Council has also created downloadable marketing assets, including sample social media graphics and posts, web banners, posters, logos, and more, which are all available on nationalsunglassesday.com.

In addition, The Vision Council encourages eyecare providers to discuss healthy vision maintenance, including the impact of UV eye exposure and the breadth of UV-protective eyewear option with patients. Additional information regarding UV eye protection and sunglasses is available on ThinkAboutYourEyes.com.

Ashley Mills, CEO of The Vision Council, said, “As practices around the country are staring to reopen, National Sunglasses Day is a great way for eyecare providers to engage with patients in a positive way. By providing resources like shareable social media posts, we hope to make it easier for eyecare providers to connect with their patients and reinforce the importance of eye health.”

This year, The Vision Council will elevate awareness of the campaign and encourage consumers to get involved through the distribution of a press release over PR Newswire.
