Two of the most common conditions I see as a pediatric optometrist, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic began, are myopia development/progression and binocular vision disorders. This should come as no surprise to optometrists, as many studies have shown an increase in the usage of digital devices during the pandemic compared to the pre-pandemic period. Of particular interest is a case series that reported four patients who developed acquired concomitant esotropia from excessive near device usage during the COVID-19 lockdown, all with normal neurological exams and imaging.
