Today marks the start of the three-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. For many of us, this simply means we have an extra day to work on things around the house, to spend additional quality time with family or even to start those new projects that keep getting pushed off. But there’s also time this weekend to reflect on the accomplishments of the great Dr. King and the way he managed to take a measured and well-thought out approach to achieving his goals.

NEW YORK—The speaker roster is expanding for the upcoming Vision Monday Global Leadership Summit, "Decoding the Consumer: The New Science of Customer Behavior." Experts in new retail and health care technologies have joined the day-long exclusive program, which will be held here on March 20 at The Times Center. In the emerging category of using AI technology to build out knowledge of the customer and help create new and improved experiences, Justine Santa Cruz, SVP of enterprise and retail at Satisfi Labs joins the program. Also taking part in the health care aspect of the VM Summit program is Dr. Roger Smith, Ph.D., chief technology officer for the AdventHealth Nicholson Center in Florida, where he is responsible for establishing the technology strategy and initiating research projects to improve hospital operations.

For Vady Khalil, a second-year optometry student at the Western University of Health Sciences—College of Optometry, his journey to the U.S. was not an easy one. Khalil came to the U.S. as a refugee in 2008 after having migrated within the Middle East for five years. His father, who was an employee at the United Nations in Iraq, was severely injured when his office building was bombed in August of 2003 and eventually had to be moved to Europe for treatment, causing Khalil to be separated from his family—his mother and two younger brothers moved to London to be with his father while he and his sister moved to Jordan. After living in Jordan for two years, Khalil and his sister were once again forced to move to Syria because without Jordanian citizenship, they couldn’t complete their education. After spending three years in Syria, he finally came to the U.S. in 2008 and is now an optometry student.
