What Are You Reading? The Optical Community Has a Stack of Recommendations to Consider

NEW YORK—Many of us set out with ambitious summer reading lists, but then reality sets in and we end August with the same stack of books on the nightstand that piled up there on Memorial Day weekend. Well, this summer may turn out to be—unfortunately—the summer when a new reality sets in and that stack of books we want to read isn’t quite high enough. Or only half high enough. Well, it’s still early in July and there’s always hope that things take a turn for the better, finally, in 2020. In the meantime, there are plenty of good books out there to help wile away the time. Here’s a look at what our colleagues are reading this summer, and it’s certainly a list that has a little bit of everything for everyone.

Organizers of Vision Expo West 2020 Announce Cancellation of September 2020 Event

ALEXANDRIA, Va.—The Vision Council and Reed Exhibitions, organizers of Vision Expo, have announced today the decision to cancel Vision Expo West 2020, scheduled to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada from September 23-26. Over the past several months, Reed Exhibitions’ Vision Expo team and The Vision Council worked together to prepare and plan for the highly anticipated event while closely monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on members of the optical community, the announcement said.

Three Generations of Women ODs

Not many optometric families can boast three generations of ODs—and even fewer can say that they’re three generations of women ODs—but the Montecalvos can. Brenda Montecalvo, OD, FCOVD, FAAO, FCSO, and her daughter Natalie Montecalvo, OD, MS, had the influence and mentorship of Marilyn Brenne Heinke, OD, FAAO, FCOVD. Dr. Heinke is a 1945 graduate of the Northern Illinois College of Optometry. An accomplished optometrist, lobbyist for physicians and single mother of four after her husband passed away while the young couple was still in their 40s, Dr. Heinke took few breaks.
