From Processing ‘Scripts’ to Reading Scripts: How 3 Ex Optical Lab Owners Found Success in the Film Biz

It’s a plotline straight out of the movies. Three former optical wholesale lab owners leave behind the daily grind of making prescription eyewear to become producers of independent films featuring Alec Baldwin, Marisa Tomei and other big name stars. Like the legal disclaimer seen at the start of many movies, this story is based on actual events. In fact, the main characters—Michael J. Rothstein, formerly Hirsch Optical in New York, Mike Palkovicz, formerly of I-See Optical Lab in New Jersey and Greg Ruden, formerly of Expert Optics in Illinois—are real people who are well-known to many in optical. How they landed their dream job is the true story of three middle-aged guys who each sold their successful family business, invested in an indie production company, took a leap into the unknown and landed on their feet.

NEW YORK—ECPs corroborated the national statistics showing a sharp uptick in the incidence of COVID-19 cases in their communities across the country, noting the impact of the pandemic on their own staffing situations, as more of those associates have been personally affected, examined their end-of year sales and underscored their belief that the availability of vaccines will be key to a recovery. Their views were shared in the 18th Wave of the Coronavirus ECP Survey conducted Dec. 21-31, 2020, by Jobson Research, which has been surveying ECP and optical retailers since the crisis and shutdowns happened in mid-March.

Indies Welcome in a New Year

NEW YORK—For many of us in the optical industry, 2020 was supposed to be a year to remember. As it turned out, it will be exactly that—but not for the reasons we hoped it would be. This week, people all around the world welcomed the start of 2021 with open arms—including independent ECPs, who shared New Year’s messages with their patients and followers online. Although 2020 was a tough year, and 2021 will undoubtedly have some tough moments as well, there’s no denying that there is often something special in the air at the start of a new year. Many of us aren’t asking much of 2021—just to be kinder than the year before. This week, we’re taking a look at how some independent ECPs welcomed the new year on social media.
