NEW YORK—Spring is in the air—at least we can hope. Yes, it does appear the tide is finally starting to turn against this awful year-long pandemic and perhaps even the harshest days of winter are winding down across the country. But another sure sign that a new spring isn’t far off is the start of the Major League Baseball season. Those magic words—pitchers and catchers are reporting—resonated against a wintry backdrop just two weeks ago and, thankfully, the real spring training games begin this weekend.

NEW YORK—All optical sales categories suffered substantial declines nationally over the course of last week (Feb. 15-21) due to historically severe winter weather, according to Jobson’s Practice Performance Tracker. Declines in optical sales ranged from -14 index points for contact lenses to -16 index points for gross revenue and lens pairs. These numbers are likely to rebound when the impact from severe winter weather has passed. Also this past week, the U.S. approached an unfortunate milestone, half a million dead due to COVID-19, according to the COVID Tracking Project.

NEW YORK—In 1915, Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). In 1926, the association, which “was dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by Black Americans and other peoples of African descent,” according to History.com, began sponsoring a national “Negro History Week.” Celebrated on the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, this week-long event grew into the Black History Month we now celebrate each and every February. President Gerald Ford officially recognized February as Black History Month in 1976.
