With Halloween Approaching, Contact Lens Safety Is Top of Mind

With Halloween just two weeks away, it’s a good time for ECPs to talk with patients about contact lens safety and the dangers of wearing lenses that are dispensed without an eye exam or a prescription. According to the Food and Drug Administration, wearing decorative contact lenses can be risky and wearing any kind of contact lenses, including decorative ones, can cause serious damage to your eyes if the lenses are obtained without a prescription or are not used correctly. Here are some of the things that can go terribly wrong with your eyes when wearing decorative or cosmetic contact lenses sold in stores or online.

#PumpkinPatchProject Brings Fun and Awareness to Amblyopia in Children

NEW YORK—Each year, the team at A Child’s Eyes, a pediatric practice, in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, hosts the Pumpkin Patch Project, a community event to help spread awareness for amblyopia and vision impairment in children. The project involves patching one eye of a jack-o-lantern, and the goal is to designate homes with patched pumpkins as “scary free zones,” where children can trick-or-treat knowing there will be no jump scares. In addition, those taking part in the project can share their patched pumpkins on social media to spread awareness—both about vision impairment in children and the project itself.
