Quick Take: Sky Sight Vision of Tulsa, Okla. has developed a sunglass lens that reduces glare and improves viewing between contrasting scenes.
Wearer: Designed for pilots, drivers, boaters and post-mydriatic patients, the tri-tinted lens features a darkly tinted zone for distance viewing, a lightly tinted zone for intermediate viewing and a moderately tinted zone for near viewing.
Specifics: The lens had a 13 percent transmittance in the far field, 94 percent transmittance in the intermediate field, and 29 percent transmittance in the near field. Illumination in the far field is 710 lux (viewing over the nose of the aircraft), the intermediate field is 2 lux (viewing the instrument panel) and the near field 20 lux (viewing an approach chart).
Selling Points: “A characteristic of this visual environment is the far field illumination easily can be 100 to 1,000 times brighter than the instrument panel. Thus, a person who experiences glare can find the illumination from the glare is a bright as the instruments,” said Sky Sight Vision’s Ray Hobbs, who is a pilot.
