New Wearable Helps Prevent Medical Problems in Children Caused by Overuse of Screens

Product: EyeForcer
Top Line: Medical Wearable Solutions, based in Vancouver, Canada, is introducing Eyeforcer, a wearable device that controls and rewards children when using handheld devices, promoting safe and proper use of electronics.
Close Up: The lightweight device looks like a frameless pair of glasses and can be worn by children as young as three years old. Using proprietary technologies, the wearable is able to detect if children are slouching or sitting a position that could harm their physical development over time. The device helps prevent what Medical Wearable Solutions co-founder Vahid Sahiholnasab, MD, calls “Gameboy Disease,” a condition caused by the constant use of gadgets such as smartphones, tablets and gaming systems. Symptoms of Gameboy Disease could include poor posture, neck pain, back pain, headaches and vision problems, according to Dr. Sahiholnasab.
“As a physician and parent, I was worried about how much time my own children spent on their electronic devices and how it affected them. Over time they became anti-social and grouchy, all they wanted to do was hunch over a screen,” said Dr. Sahiholnasab. “After speaking with other parents and researching the effects of technology on children, we discovered studies proving that texting, gaming and spending hours in front of electronic devices can actually physically harm children.”

Eyesight Simulator Lets You See Through Others’ Eyes

Product: Eye Sim
Top Line: Eye Sim is an online eyesight simulator that allows you to see how others view the world. Using an eye prescription, the Eye Sim algorithm blurs an image to simulate a user’s uncorrected vision. Users then share their vision on social networks to show others how they see the world.
The Eye Sim is an educational tool that can benefit eyecare clinics and hospitals, according to Joe Fenton, a venture capitalist, physicist and entrepreneur who is marketing the technology.
Close Up: Developed by physicists from Harvard University and Warwick University, Eye Sim uses complex algorithms to construct a wavefront consisting of Zernike polynomials. A convolution is then performed of the wavefront and an image to simulate natural eyesight.
Vital Stats: The Eye Sim website, intellectual property and social media channels are currently for sale.
