AALEN, Germany—Zeiss Vision Care has announced the acquisition of a collection of patents centered on electronic functionalities for eyeglass lenses and frame electronics. The patents were acquired as part of a comprehensive intellectual property portfolio from Mitsui Chemicals and serve as a strategic investment that will open new opportunities for the development of electroactive lenses and spectacle frames, according to a statement from Zeiss. The move also allows Zeiss to gain access to broader intellectual assets, empowering the company to develop new products for global markets while advancing technological innovations within the eyewear and eyeglass lens industry, the company said.

Specific financial details of the transaction were not disclosed; however, Zeiss made note of the contributions these acquired patents will make to its research and development initiatives as well as licensing business.
