Line of Sight in New York City is a unique, boutique eyecare practice.

NEW YORK—Jennifer Tsai, OD, founder and owner of Line of Sight in New York City, created her practice to be a unique environment with a boutique, concierge feel, blending eyecare and wellness in a holistic way. As she explained to VM, “We have an exceptional team that works hard to keep the practice running smoothly to help patients with vision care and promote eye health. I specialize in specialty contact lens and offer an array of other services including dry eye treatments, vision therapies, ocular aesthetics and myopia control solutions.”

As part of this holistic approach, Dr. Tsai has always had sustainability at the front of her mind. She said, “Climate change has such a negative impact on eye health, with environmental factors such as pollution, UV index and toxins playing a role in potentially affecting the vision and eye health of my patients, so it is important to be environmentally conscious.” It was an easy decision, then, for Dr. Tsai and her team to join Bausch + Lomb’s recycling programs. She said, “they provide a convenient way for my patients to properly recycle their products and give back to the environment.”

Through the Bausch + Lomb One by One program, the Line of Sight team encourages their community to collect and drop off used contact lens materials to their office. Because the program accepts all brands of used contact lenses, blister packs and top foils, Line of Sight can offer a truly wide-reaching sustainability effort. In addition, Line of Sight collections used eyecare and lens care materials as part of Bausch + Lomb’s Biotrue Eye Care Recycling program, including contact lens cases or single dose units.

Setting this program up was easy, said Dr. Tsai—something accessible and achievable for practices everywhere. She said, “After signing up online, it was an easy transition to set up the materials Bausch + Lomb provided to get the program set up at our practice. Once the Bausch + Lomb recycling bins are filled, Bausch + Lomb provides free shipping labels for our office to send in the used materials for recycling.”

To make it easy for their patients, the Line of Sight team explains the process during check out, and sends a note before the patients’ next appointment, reminding them to bring in their items for recycling. The team places recycling bins in each exam room, close to the sink where patients trial their contacts.

And when it comes to patients, Dr. Tsai says she’s received a positive reaction across the board. In fact, she said, “Our patients are often relieved when we initiate conversations about sustainability, and they appreciate that we are taking action to be part of the solution.” Once the Bausch + Lomb recycling programs were visible inside the office, patients immediately began participating, and the team has found that education at check out and through appointment reminders has only increased overall participation. Plus, she said, daily contact lens purchases at the office have increased since the implementation of the recycling programs, too.

Of course, the Line of Sight team is a holistic one, so they engage in sustainable practices throughout the office too. Dr. Tsai said, “our office reduces waste and has chosen to go paperless, we always recycle and we always choose sustainably made eyewear and contact lens care. Additionally, we donate eyewear to organizations that support underserved communities. We look forward to expanding our participation in other green initiatives.”

For Line of Sight, a practice that prioritizes a holistic, luxurious and concierge eyecare experience, it only makes sense that contact lens recycling becomes part of the eyecare journey. It allows the team to be with their patients from step one through to the end, and creates a sense of connection and responsibility for all involved. Said Dr. Tsai, “Our local community really enjoys contributing to this so much so that nearby retailers tell their customers about it.”
