NEW YORK—Advances like artificial intelligence, program learning, virtual reality, facial recognition, and 5G are becoming available to benefit people who are blind and visually impaired. To help New Yorkers with vision loss access these and other technologies, Lighthouse Guild is opening a state-of-the-art technology center here. The organization, which services people throughout the metro New York area who are blind and visually impaired, is hosting an official opening celebration of the Lighthouse Guild Tech Center today in Manhattan.

The Center will provide access to the latest devices and provide a facility where developers can test future innovations. Lighthouse Guild experts and clients will demonstrate devices and answer questions. Staff will conduct tours and demonstrate a high-tech Smart Home where people who are visually impaired can experience the newest technology for managing their home settings, including voice activated appliances such as microwaves, ovens, and refrigerators, devices that can read labels on cans and adjust thermostats and more.

Community leaders, Lighthouse Guild clients, and vision loss experts will be welcomed by Dr. Calvin Roberts, president and CEO of Lighthouse Guild and host of the podcast, “On Tech and Vision with Dr. Cal Roberts.” The event will be livestreamed on the Lighthouse Guild’s Facebook page from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. ET.
