Not all public figures are just in it for the fame, many try to parlay their high profiles into improving the world around them. From a Surgeon General to the “Sexiest Man Alive,” Bold Face features four individuals in super specs trying to make the world a better place…

Vice Admiral Regina Marcia Benjamin, USPHS is the 18th Surgeon General of the United States appointed by President Obama in 2009 and unanimously approved by the United States Senate. Before her appointment Dr. Benjamin directed a nonprofit primary care medical clinic in Bayou La Batre, Alabama and since taking on her role her mission has become addressing childhood obesity and creating more awareness of the bad effects of tobacco. She has devoted her life to raising the public’s awareness of health issue and has received many awards and honors for her service to public health and human rights. Her high profile role as “America’s Doctor” doesn’t come without a little glamour, here the Alabama-born Surgeon General wears the Diane von Furstenberg DVF504 optical style from Marchon

Matt Damon
may be one of the “Sexiest Men Alive” but he is also a huge philanthropist. He was the founder of the H2O Africa Foundation, which later merged with WaterPartners to create Water.org. He, along with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, and Jerry Weintraub, is one of the founders of Not On Our Watch, an organization that focuses global attention and resources to stop global atrocities. Damon also supports the ONE Campaign, which fights AIDS and poverty in Third World countries. He’s an ambassador for OneXOne, a non-profit committed to supporting, preserving and improving the lives of children around the world; as well as being a spokesperson for Feeding America, the largest U.S.-focused hunger-relief organization. Despite his mission to improve the world he still finds time to make movies, like “Hereafter,” the premier of which caught him wearing the Bevel 6510 optical frame…

Emily Deschanel
plays Dr. Temperance Brennan from TV show “Bones” where she is often faced with all manner of unappealing human remains. With a day job like that its no wonder that in her personal life Deschanel is a vegan and a committed supporter of animal rights causes. She can be seen in an Access Hollywood video at the book launch event of Karen Dawn's “Thanking the Monkey: Rethinking the Way We Treat Animals,” discussing how vegetarian and vegan diets help the environment, and a video on the homepage of the book's website talking about the importance of animal rights. Its not all work and no play for the lovely actress though; here she can be seen rocking a pair of Converse Front Man sunglasses from REM

You may know him as the star of “Dirty Jobs” and the face of Ford automobiles but Mike Rowe also devotes time to his website MikeRoweWorks.com, which focuses on the decline of the blue collar trades. The site provides information, resources and forums for people interested in learning about, or pursuing a trade career. In 2010, Rowe and the Association of Equipment Manufacturers started a grassroots campaign called “I Make America.” The campaign aims to create jobs in the manufacturing sector by encouraging infrastructure investment and export agreement to improve the economy and global competitiveness of the U.S. With a schedule like that we can’t blame the guy for taking a little time off; on a recent vacation Rowe was snapped wearing the Alexander Daas Eye Do II sunglasses.
