NEW YORK—A new entry runway complete with oversized facial portraits and a zebra motif continued in the lounge area is bringing a refreshed, modern look to Vision Expo’s Underground, now in its sixth year. Originally conceived as a way to bring all exhibitors together under one roof for the convenience of show attendees, The Underground serves as the perfect venue for today’s economic climate, Underground exhibitors reported.

This year’s Underground featured a new entry runway complete with
oversized facial portraits and a zebra motif.
“The Underground makes even more of a statement today than it did in the past,” said Robert Marc, an Underground exhibitor since its inception. “The Underground is all about understated elegance and quality. Our customers are looking for less conspicuous consumption now, but are still interested in beautiful, exclusive, timeless product that’s an investment for the future. And that’s why this environment works.”

Sheila Vance of Sama Eyewear agreed. “I’m high on the idea of a relaxed, calming, creative atmosphere that’s not distracting. Our customers like coming to The Underground for this reason,” she said. “Although they may be buying less than they were in the past, they are not compromising on quality. They want unique product, the perfect pair of eyewear. We are all suffering from the recession. The Underground is an environment where we can all come together, share our experiences and gather strength to get through this. And we will.”

Lori Robinson of Legacie, The Luxury House of B Robinson Optical, also feels The Underground is the right environment for the company’s customers. “We have been here since the beginning and we are very happy with the venue,” she said. “We have a bigger space this year because we are now also showcasing David Yurman Eyewear. People are definitely more careful about their purchases than in the past and are paying more attention to detail. They visit The Underground because it’s a special place with special, unique product.”—Gloria Nicola
