Over the years, I have always watched the red carpet for couture fashions that make their way down, but the optical girl in me has come to realize that eyewear is just as vital an accessory to a red carpet look as any Lorraine Schwartz necklace. With millions of people watching, on TV broadcasts and online, eyewear’s spotlight time—and the influence it can have on other eyewear consumers—is often a missed opportunity.

Iconic award show moments such as Michael Jackson’s record-breaking eight awards at the Grammys in 1984 and Kanye West’s interruption of Taylor Swift at the MTV VMAs in 2009 both featured some classic aviators. And the last two Cecile B. DeMille award recipients at the Golden Globes, Meryl Streep in 2016 and Oprah Winfrey this year, both gave astounding speeches while rocking optical frames.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that Justin Timberlake topped off his head-to-toe denim look with a pair of oversized frames featuring tinted lenses as he walked the American Music Awards red carpet in 2001.

Part of my responsibilities here at VM is to choose content for our social media sites and our Instagram feed (@visionmonday) is perfect for red carpet looks. Though eyewear has been featured in so many looks, most celebrities and stylists just don’t give it enough love on social media. They should be proud to mention their eyewear as they answer entertainment reporters’ questions about ‘What are you wearing?’ Sterling K. Brown, Meryl Streep and Lupita Nyong’o are red carpet favorites and constant eyeglass wearers, yet sometimes we have to scramble to ID their frames after any awards show or red carpet appearance.

With the Oscars coming up in March, here’s hoping the accessory we all spend so much time with can get some love.
