Karl Golnik, MD.
ST. PAUL, Minn.—The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) has named ophthalmologist Karl Golnik, MD, MEd, its 22nd president. Succeeding Tyree Carr, MD, who served as JCAHPO’s president from 2011 to 2013, Dr. Golnik will be installed at the JCAHPO annual meeting in New Orleans on Nov. 15, 2013.

Dr. Golnik is a national leader in both ophthalmological practice and education. He received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University and completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Virginia. Today, he serves concurrently as a neuro-ophthalmologist at the University of Cincinnati Neuroscience Institute; a professor of ophthalmology, neurology, and neurosurgery at both the University of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Eye Institute; and a professor of ophthalmology at the University of Louisville.

He has published over 100 articles on neuro-ophthalmology and served as editor-in-chief of the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Ophthalmic News and Education network, president of the Program Director's Council, and chair of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology's Resident Education Committee. Dr. Golnik currently serves as the Director of Education of the International Council of Ophthalmology, where he volunteers much of his time instructing residency program directors in the most effective teaching methods.

JCAHPO immediate past president, Dr. Carr, noted, “I am honored to ‘hand the gavel’ to Dr. Golnik, who brings exceptional leadership to our organization. He has a great commitment to the education and the value of certification of our ophthalmic medical personnel, as well as a deep understanding of JCAHPO’s mission and programs since he served as the secretary of education and e-learning. While under Dr. Golnik's chairmanship of the E-Learning Committee, he advanced JCAHPO’s online education presence and learning technologies with the development of a first-class online and webinar program for the entire eyecare team.”

“I am honored and excited to be selected as JCAHPO’s president for the next two years, and I look forward to leading the organization into a future that draws on, substantiates and continues JCAHPO’s history as a visionary in the field of ophthalmic allied health certification and education,” Dr. Golnik said. “I am privileged to serve as chief volunteer and strive to advance the standards set by my exceptional predecessors.”
