BENTONVILLE, Ark.—Walmart Inc. (NYSE:WMT) is making organizational changes within the operations of two optical lab facilities that will result in some positions being eliminated. According to a statement the retailer provided VMAIL on Monday, the changes are being carried out at the company’s optical labs in Fayetteville, Ark., and Crawfordsville, Ind. “In response to changing business needs, we are making adjustments at our Walmart Optical Labs in Fayetteville and Crawfordsville to help ensure we have the right people in the right place at the right time,” the statement noted.

“We are committed to helping the associates impacted by this decision take advantage of new opportunities and are hopeful that we will be able to help many of the associates find other roles at nearby Walmart stores or Sam’s Clubs.”

Walmart is third-largest optical retailer in the U.S., with roughly 3,450 optical locations combined across its Walmart and Sam’s Club businesses, according to the VM Top 50 U.S. Optical Retailers report. About 2,900 of the Walmart Vision Centers are company-owned locations, while National Vision Holdings Inc. operates an additional 225 to 230 Vision Center optical departments within Walmart stores. There also are roughly 550 Walmart-owned optical departments inside Sam’s Clubs.

According to a news report, the retailer is planning to eliminate about 150 positions in its Fayetteville lab, and roughly 100 positions at the Indiana optical lab will be cut by the end of September. Walmart declined to comment on the number of lab positions impacted by the adjustments.

The news follows last week’s announcement that Mony Iyer had been named as vice present of Walmart U.S. Optical, as VMAIL reported. Iyer assumed his new role with the retailer on Monday (July 23). Iyer previously was president of Cincinnati-based OneSight, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to expanded access to eye exams and eyeglasses.

In Walmart’s announcement of Iyer’s appointment, the company acknowledged that it was in the midst of reconfiguring its optical business and that Iyer would be responsible for developing a “long-term strategy for our Vision Centers, and will lead the newly consolidated team focused on our optical business.” The announcement added, “We will bring together parts of the optical business that currently sit across various teams in merchandising, contracting and optical labs to better achieve our goals in this space.”
