WHO: Hybrids. Subtle nods to geometry. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s May 2017 exhibit honoring Rei Kawakubo and Comme des Garçons titled, “Art of the In-Between.”

WHAT: To reform is to change into an improved form or condition. These frames take aspects of geometric trends and the classic round silhouette, adding a new take to the traditional round shape by creating edges. These looks offer slight modifications to the quintessentially round look—creating an evolution to this traditional style.

WEAR: (TOP TO BOTTOM) l.a. Eyeworks is a brand that is never shy when it comes to its frame designs and colorways. Their Woodlawn frame is a bold take on the reformed round silhouette. Showcasing a rounded bottom, the shape literally adds edge with the addition of a cut at the top of the frame. De Rigo REM’s Lanvin frame SLN726S in camel is a glamourous take on the modified round look featuring a glossy finish on the outer front and temples with a matte finish on the inside. This look also showcases jeweled embellishments on the outer part of the frame. State Optical Co.’s Elston frame in seaglass is a highly wearable take on this trend. While the modification on the round can be seen, it’s a less harsh edge at the top of the frame, creating a more subtle change to the silhouette. Lowercase’s Fitz sun frame is a classic, cool version of the revamped round look. This frame in caramel is a smaller, more lightweight style that adds a slight sense of dimension through the edge created on the upper part of the silhouette while still maintaining the rounded bottom and lens. The ideal everyday sunglass.

WHY: Rounded frames have been trending in major ways, and these frames are just another facet of that. By creating a hybrid of a traditional round and a more geometric style, these reformed rounds are the next step in the rounded frame’s evolution. This cool “next generation” round is the perfect way to add a slight twist to an ordinary look.
