NEW YORK—What started as sharing kids’ photos and reunion antics has taken on a serious, integrated role in all businesses’ success. And today, social media marketing is a mainstream element of all business, service and brand marketing.

New research, conducted by social media agency, Fabric Digital, found that 48 percent of those who were asked said they seek out a business’s profile on Facebook or Twitter to see how popular they are and engage with fans. Consumers say they are checking the popularity of a brand, how it interacts with customer complaints or questions, and how many followers and fans the website has.
