EYECARE: A Greater Vision Optical Industry Takes Up the World Sight Day Challenge By Staff Thursday, October 11, 2012 9:00 AM RELATED CONTENT Transitions Optical Marks World Sight Day With ‘Record-Breaking Mosaic’ Eyecare practices, like 2011 WSD donor Lone Star Vision, will contribute to tomorrow’s World Sight Day activities. NEW YORK—Dozens of companies within the optical industry, thousands of practitioners around the country and the world are gearing up to take an active part in World Sight Day—and they are encouraging their patients and employees to do the same. World Sight Day 2012 is tomorrow, Oct. 11. The initiative is part of a year-round mission “to improve the quality of life of people who are needlessly blind or vision impaired simply because they do not have access to an eye exam and a pair of glasses.” Optometry Giving Sight reported that thousands of optometrists, staff, patients and industry colleagues worldwide will take the World Sight Day Challenge throughout the month of October to raise desperately needed funds for people with refractive error blindness and impaired vision. “It’s not too late for anyone who wants to make a difference in the lives of people who are needlessly blind or vision impaired to take the Challenge,” said Dr. Mary Anne Murphy, chairperson of Optometry Giving Sight USA. “This is our chance as a profession and community to ensure that all people have access to quality vision care provided by a qualified eye care professional, no matter where they live in the world.” For practices, companies, patients and students, a click can provide a range of tools to enable fundraising support and participation. The Optometry Giving Sight website is loaded with many updates as well as an informational video which can explain how eyecare practitioners and their patients can donate a portion of their sales, or a component of their purchase to the cause.
